About This Site
Top Music Therapy is a small independent site about simple, calming instruments you can play at home with no lessons: steel tongue drums, Tibetan singing bowls, kalimbas, tuned wind chimes and rain sticks. Every review comes from regular, everyday use, with attention to sound, build, ease of play and value. These instruments can be a pleasant part of a relaxation or wind-down routine. They are not medical devices and they are not a substitute for care from a licensed professional.

Wellness and Instrument Safety
Nothing on this site is medical, psychological or music therapy advice. The instruments we review can be part of a relaxing routine, but they do not diagnose, treat or cure anxiety, depression, insomnia, PTSD, dementia or any other condition. If you are struggling with your mental health, please talk to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional. In the U.S. you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Protect your hearing. Singing bowls, tongue drums and chimes can ring louder and longer than you expect, especially in a small room or played close to the ear. Do not hold a struck bowl against your ear or head, keep sessions at a comfortable volume, and stop if you notice ringing in your ears or discomfort. Some people with tinnitus, sound sensitivity, migraines or seizure conditions find certain tones unpleasant, so start softly and check with your doctor if you are unsure.
Handle the instruments with care. Singing bowls can chip or crack if dropped and are heavy enough to injure a foot. Never place a bowl on your body or fill it with hot water. Rain sticks and small kalimbas contain loose beads or removable parts that are a choking hazard for young children and pets, and mallets and strikers should be kept out of reach of small kids. Hang wind chimes securely, check the cord and hook regularly, and keep them away from walkways where they could fall or swing into someone.
